3. Care Quality Commission (CQC) - Spotting the Red Flags for Harmful Cultures in Health and Social Care (Information for all Providers)

The Patient Experience Library has published Responding to Challenge, a research report looking at how to identify ‘red flags’ (early warning signals) and harmful patterns of behaviour in health and social care.

The CQC commissioned the Patient Experience Library to look at warning signals from 10 years of avoidable harm inquiries in health and social care. The report uses real-life examples to show the red flags for what could indicate a poor culture.

The Patient Experience Library also developed a Red Flag Tracker tool. This is an online resource based on the evidence used for the report. The tool can help anyone who feels something is “not quite right” to check their initial concerns against evidence.

4. Care Quality Commission (CQC) Update - Use of Wheelchairs in Care Homes – Survey 25 April 2025 - 26 May 2025 (Information for all Care Home Providers)

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and CQC, with input from other relevant organisations, are working together to understand how they can better support the adult social care sector in the safe use of wheelchairs.

Wheelchairs are essential mobility aids that can significantly improve the quality of life for many residents in care homes and nursing homes. However, their safe and effective use depends on staff having the appropriate knowledge and training.

Your participation in this survey using the link below will help the CQC understand what information or guidelines and/or support will support staff to use wheelchairs safely in care settings. It should take about 5 minutes to complete.

5. Care Quality Commission (CQC) Update - Supported Living Improvement Coalition (Information for all Supported Living Providers)

In 2021, the CQC established the Supported Living Improvement Coalition, working with partners to address concerns about the variation in people’s experience of supported living services. It brought people together to identify and embed the improvements needed.

Some of the areas of focus of the coalition were then taken forward by sub-groups. One of those groups explored the importance of respectful and inclusive language and communication in health and social care.

The group has published a suite of resources aimed at helping people working in services which include:
