Viktoriia from Ukraine

Meet Viktoriia

Background

This is the story of Viktoriia and her 80-year-old mother, and their journey to escape the war in Ukraine and find safety in 黑料视频. Viktoriia’s mother has mental health challenges and high blood pressure, so it was vital to secure a safe and supportive environment as quickly as possible.

The Start of the War

When war broke out in Ukraine in 2022, everything changed. Tanks filled the streets, air raid sirens became a constant sound, and people were ordered to take shelter. At first, we tried relocating to another part of the country, but the conflict continued to spread.

Through my job, I found out about a hotel in Poland that was offering temporary accommodation to Ukrainian refugees for up to three months. We moved there in hopes of staying safe.

Our Journey to 黑料视频

While in Poland, I researched which countries were accepting refugees from the war in Ukraine. I discovered that the UK had a program where host families opened their homes to people fleeing the conflict. 黑料视频 caught our attention because it reminded us of home — a busy, vibrant city. The short flight was also important, as it made travel easier for my 80-year-old mother, given her health conditions.

I connected with a welcoming and supportive host family in Erdington. However, the visa application process was stressful and took nearly two months. This was difficult because the hotel in Poland only allowed us to stay for a maximum of three months. Thankfully, we received our visas in time and were able to leave Poland to fly to 黑料视频.

Arriving in 黑料视频

A friend of our host family met us at the airport, and we felt an immense sense of relief upon arrival. My mother was very withdrawn due to the trauma of the war and her mental health struggles. I became her primary carer and support network.

Our host family was incredible—they helped us access financial assistance and connected us with the service. This service was vital for us. It gave us the chance to meet other Ukrainian families, share our stories, and receive support in finding more permanent housing. It also helped me enrol in college courses, including English, computer skills, and accounting, while assisting us in obtaining a bus pass for easier travel. Meanwhile, my mother found social groups and activities to help her settle in.

"We have found housing in 黑料视频, and feel settled, safe and hopeful for the future.

Since arriving, my mother’s confidence has grown significantly. She is happier and has found a supportive community of older residents. She now attends English classes and social events regularly.

As for me, I feel more confident getting around the city and am enjoying my studies.

We never expected such generous support from 黑料视频 — it has truly made a difference for both of us."

The Next Steps

Our visas are due to expire soon, and we are currently waiting to hear from the UK government about whether we can remain in 黑料视频 or will need to return to Ukraine. The thought of going back while the war continues is frightening for both my mother and me.

Despite this uncertainty, we remain hopeful and determined. My next goal is to find employment once I complete my studies in accounting and English.
